Bamboo Flooring: Renewable, Cost-Effective Building Material

Cost Effective Bamboo FlooringBamboo flooring is a popular choice among builders and homeowners who want a sustainable and environmentally sound building material. This type of residential flooring offers many advantages and benefits - it is easy to clean and maintain; is dust-proof and discourages dust mite populations, making it a good choice for homeowners with allergies; easy to install and is durable; projects a lovely, homey feel.

Whilst bamboo flooring is a cheaper alternative to the more expensive hardwood material, it is also cost-effective in that it lasts long. Many manufacturers even offer warranties that last up to 25 years, offering coverage for damaged tiles. Furthermore, there is a good range of colours available, thanks to different treatments that allow bamboo flooring to be stained. A type of treatment that uses the carbonized method results in a darker brown tone.

Bamboo Finishes

Flooring made from bamboo are usually treated with a finishing treatment that also contributes to its durability. The finishing treatment also results to certain visual characteristics, producing bamboo flooring with semi-gloss and satin coat finishes.

Why choose bamboo flooring over hardwood?

Bamboo is a renewable source of building material. Unlike trees harvested for hardwood, bamboo takes only a few years to mature. The roots of the plant remain alive even after harvesting the trunk and are still capable of generating new stems, allowing the plant to quickly replenish what was already taken.

Whilst installation costs are the same for both materials, bamboo floors are cheaper and thus offers significant savings.

Maintenance

Bamboo floors can usually be dry-cleaned using a mop. For stubborn dirt and oils, a quick treatment with water and mild detergent may be used but the material must be dried immediately after since it cannot withstand too much exposure to moisture.

Its vulnerability to frequent moisture and humidity exposure also does not make it ideal for bathrooms and toilets. If the flooring is installed in these areas, manufacturers may refuse to offer warranty coverage because of the high likelihood that the environment will cause swelling and warping. Bamboo flooring should be acclimated first prior to installation.
